Linearity and reversibility of iodide adsorption on sediments from Hanford, Washington under water saturated conditions

A series of adsorption and desorption experiments were completed to determine the linearity and reversibility of iodide adsorption onto sediment at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington. Adsorption experiments conducted with Hanford formation sediment and groundwater spiked with dissolved I-125 (as an analog tracer for I-129) indicated that iodide adsorption was very low (0.2 mL/g) at pH 7.5 and could be represented by a linear isotherm up to a total concentration of 100 mg/L dissolved iodide. The results of desorption experiments revealed that up to 60% of adsorbed iodide was readily desorbed after 14 days by iodide-free groundwater. Because iodide adsorption was considered to be partially reversible, even though small amount of initial iodide is retarded by adsorption at mineral-water interfaces, the weak adsorption affinity results in release of iodide when iodide-free pore waters and uncontaminated groundwaters contact the contaminated sediments in the vadose zone and aquifer systems. Kinetic isotope effects in the reduction of methyl iodide

alpha-Deuterium (alpha-D) kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) have been determined for the reaction of methyl iodide with a series of reducing agents. Reagents which transfer hydride ion in an S(N)2 reaction show small inverse or small normal KIEs. Reagents which transfer an electron to methyl iodide to produce methyl radical show large normal KIEs up to 20% per alpha-D. Large KIEs were found for the reaction of methyl iodide with sodium, for Pd-catalyzed reaction of methyl iodide with hydrogen, for electron transfer (ET) at a platinum cathode, for ET from benzophenone ketyl or from sodium naphthalenide, for iron-catalyzed ET from a Grignard reagent to methyl iodide, and for reduction of methyl iodide with tributyltin hydride or with gaseous hydrogen iodide. Very small KIEs were found for electron transfer to methyl iodide from magnesium in ether or from sodium in ammonia. The reason may be that these reactions are transport or diffusion controlled.

Effect of soil physical factors on methyl iodide and methyl bromide

Production and importation of methyl bromide is scheduled to be banned by 2001. Methyl iodide was evaluated as a possible replacement soil fumigant. The effects of soil moisture, temperature, soil texture and fumigation time on the efficacy of methyl iodide for the control of two common weeds, Abutilon theophrasti and Lolium multiflorum, were characterized and compared with those of methyl bromide. The optimal soil moisture for methyl iodide to kill both weed species in sandy soils was 14% water content (w/w). Greater efficacy was obtained when the temperature during fumigation was above 20 degrees C. Compared to methyl bromide, the efficacy of methyl iodide was more consistent in different soils. Time to 100% mortality of weeds was 24 h for methyl iodide fumigation and 36 h for methyl bromide when 200 mu M of fumigant was used. On a molar basis methyl iodide was consistently more effective than methyl bromide across the range of environmental factors tested. In terms of application technology and spectrum of activity, methyl bromide can be directly replaced by methyl iodide. (C) 1998 SCI.

Acyl iodides in organic synthesis. reaction of acetyl iodide with Dialkyl sulfides and disulfides

Reactions of acetyl iodide with dialkyl and dialkenyl sulfides RSR (R = Et, Bu, CH2=CH, CH2=CHCH2) and with disulfides RSSR (R = Pr, C6H13, PhCH2) were studied. Dialkyl sulfides reacted with MeCOI to give the corresponding alkyl ethanethioates and alkyl iodides as a result of cleavage of the S-C bond. The reactions of acetyl iodide with divinyl and diallyl sulfides involved addition across the double bond and subsequent polymerization of 1-alkenylsulfanyl-2(3)-iodoalkyl methyl ketones. Dialkyl disulfides RSSR (R = Pr, C6H13) and dibenzyl disulfide reacted with acetyl iodide via cleavage of the S-S bond to produce the corresponding ethanethioates and organylsulfenyl iodides. The latter underwent disproportionation to form the initial disulfide and molecular iodine. DOI: 10.1134/S1070428013010090

A novel V59E missense mutation in the sodium iodide symporter gene in a family with iodide transport defect

Iodide transport defect results from the malfunction of iodide transporter (sodium iodide symporter [NISI), and is characterized by low uptake of iodide into thyroid cells. Genetic analysis revealed that a T354P missense mutation causes iodide transport defect in the homozygous state and is a frequent mutation in the Japanese population. We recently reported three siblings with iodide transport defect harboring the T354P mutation in the heterozygous state. Here we report a novel V59E missense mutation associated with these siblings. The mutant protein showed low iodide transport activity.

Development of W/O Microemulsion for Transdermal Delivery of Iodide Ions

The objective of this study was to develop a water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion which can be utilized as a transdermal delivery for iodide ions. Several w/o microemulsion formulations were prepared utilizing Span 20, ethanol, Capryol 90 (R), and water. The selected formulations had 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and a maximum of 23% w/w water content. Potassium iodide (KI) was incorporated in all formulations at 5% w/v. Physicochemical characterizations were conducted to evaluate the structure and stability. These studies included: mean droplet size, pH, viscosity, conductivity, and chemical stability tests. In vitro human skin permeation studies were conducted to evaluate the diffusion of the iodide ion through human skin. The w/o microemulsion formulations were stable and compatible with iodide ions with water content ranging from 5% to 23% w/w. The addition of KI influenced the physicochemical properties of microemulsion as compared to blank microemulsion formulations. In vitro human skin permeation studies indicated that selected formulations improved iodide ion diffusion significantly as compared to control (KI solution; P value <0.05). Iodide ions were entrapped within the aqueous core of w/o microemulsion. Span 20, ethanol and Capryol 90 protected the iodide ions against oxidation and formed a stable microemulsion. It is worth to note that according to Hofmeister series, iodide ions tend to lower the interfacial tension between water and oil and consequently enhance overall stability. This work illustrates that microemulsion system can be utilized as a vehicle for the transdermal administration of iodide. Iodide-Catalyzed Ring-Opening Cyclization of Cyclohexane-1,3-dione-2-spirocyclopropanes

The ring-opening cyclization of 2′,3′-nonsubstituted and 2′-electron-withdrawing group (EWG)-substituted cyclohexane-1,3-dione-2-spirocyclopropanes was accomplished using iodide as a catalyst. The nonsubstituted derivatives afforded 3,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1-benzofuran-4(2H)-ones in high yields in the presence of trimethylsilyl iodide at room temperature. The EWG-substituted spirocyclopropanes, in turn, underwent regioselective ring opening followed by cyclization, which gave rise to 2-substituted tetrahydrobenzofuran-4-ones when a combination of tetrabutylammonium iodide catalyst and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid was used, whereas calcium iodide afforded the 3-substituted derivatives.

The C-11-radioisotopic study of methanol conversion on V-MCM-41: The influence of methyl iodide on the transformation

The methanol conversion and a feasible methanol co-reaction with methyl iodide were studied on a vanadium incorporated MCM-41 type (V-MCM-41) mesoporous catalyst. which was prepared by a direct hydrothermal synthesis method. Adsorption/desorption as well as conversion derivates of radioactive methanol were easily followed by radioactivity detectors on V-MCM-41. The transformation and coreaction products were analyzed by a gas chromatograph equipped with Radio/FID detectors. The radiodetector was applied to distinguish C-11-derivates from the non-radioactive methyl iodide and its derivates. The radio-labeling method proved methanol transformation to methylal and, in the presence of methyl iodide, decided the roles of methyl group and iodide of methyl iodide in newly synthesized methyl iodide formation in the absence of oxygen gas.
