The present work examines the reduction of solid silver iodide on a silver electrode and proposes a mechanism for this process. Voltammetric and coulometric studies for the steady and transient states showed adsorption of silver iodide at the electrode depending on its concentration; this adsorption is in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm for low concentrations and with multi-layer models (such as the BET isotherm) for higher concentrations. Reduction of silver iodide at the silver electrode can take place through several processes such as direct reduction of solid particles, or reduction of the adsorbed silver iodide and involves the formation of a dendritic silver deposit not adhering to the electrode and free iodide in solution. Abiotic formation of methyl iodide on synthetic birnessite: A mechanistic study

Methyl iodide is a well-known volatile halogenated organic compound that contributes to the iodine content in the troposphere, potentially resulting in damage to the ozone layer. Most methyl iodide sources derive from biological activity in oceans and soils with very few abiotic mechanisms proposed in the literature. In this study we report that synthetic manganese oxide (birnessite delta-MnO2) can catalyze the formation of methyl iodide in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) and iodide. Methyl iodide formation was only observed at acidic pH (4-5) where iodide is oxidized to iodine and NOM is adsorbed on delta-MnO2. The effect of delta-MnO2, iodide and NOM concentrations, nature of NOM and ionic strength was investigated. High concentrations of methyl iodide were formed in experiments conducted with the model compound pyruvate. The Lewis acid property of delta-MnO2 leads to a polarization of the iodine molecule, and catalyzes the reaction with natural organic matter. As manganese oxides are strong oxidants and are ubiquitous in the environment, this mechanism could significantly contribute to the global atmospheric input of iodine. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Protection by iodide of lens from selenite-induced cataract

Background. Iodide has been used empirically against different age-related eye diseases, including cataract. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of iodide on selenite-induced cataract in rat lens. Methods. Young white rats received subcutaneously sodium selenite (20 and 30 nmol/g b.w.) on day 13 post partum (p.p.). Cataract development was measured by expert estimation and image data analysis. Potassium iodide (1.5 nmol/g b.w.) was given (1-5 times) i.p. at different times with respect to the selenite administration. Lens opacification was analyzed in selenite, selenite-iodide, iodide and control groups on day 7 after selenite administration. Results. Iodide showed a significant protective effect against selenite cataract when injected 2 days (2 times) before selenite injection, i.e., on days 11 and 12 p.p. No significant effects on lens opacity were found: (1) after only one iodide injection (on day 12 p.p.), (2) after an initial iodide administration 1 h before selenite and (3) after injections of iodide once a day for 5 consecutive days. The protective effect of iodide was the same (about 50%) for both selenite doses used. Conclusions. There is a time-dependent protective influence of iodide against selenite cataract development. It is supposed that the anticataract effect of iodide could be based on direct or indirect antioxidant mechanisms.

In this paper, inorganic iodide ligands were used in PbS quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) with iodide/triiodide electrolytes. ISS data show that iodide ions are more heavily segregated at the last-solidified surface. For the first-solidified surface, there is a smaller enhancement of iodide ions within the top 100 angstrom region relative to the rest of the near-surface region. Systematic fluorescence EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) and SEXAFS (surface EXAFS) measurements were made at 35 +/- 5 K on both the Br and I absorption edges to study the local iodide distribution, bonding and structure of the top surface and bulk layers. EXAFS and SEXAFS data show that there are significant differences in the local iodide distribution and silver ion vacancy concentration between the bulk and surface layers. These differences vary with the concentration of iodide ions in the samples. For the bulk layers, there are no changes in the local iodide distribution and silver vacancy concentration as a function of iodide concentration, in contrast to the surface layers where significant differences were observed. Changes in the iodide concentration, local iodide distribution and silver vacancy concentration have negligible effects on the nearest-neighbor distances for both the surface and bulk layers. The nearest-neighbor I-Ag and I-Br distances are found to be slightly larger that the corresponding Br-Ag and Br-Br distances.

The average cord:maternal plasma iodide ratio was not significantly different between the preterm (0.9 +/- 0.4) and term (1.3 +/- 0.8) deliveries. Amniotic fluid iodide concentrations did not correlate significantly with cord plasma concentrations. The effects of amitrole on thyroglobulin and iodide uptake in FRTL-5 cells

Thyroid is a frequent target for endocrine effects of pesticides. Thyroglobulin (TG) and iodide uptake are crucial to thyroid hormone synthesis and may be targets of thyroid-disrupting chemicals.
