Polycrystalline Mercuric Iodide Photodetectors for Cesium Iodide Scintillators

We have fabricated thin films of polycrystalline mercuric iodide for use as photodetectors coupled to cesium iodide scintillators. The compound semiconductor mercuric iodide has a large band gap (2.13 eV) causing a peak in its quantum efficiency (570 nm) which is well matched to the output of cesium iodide (550 nm). Single crystal mercuric iodide photodetectors coupled to cesium iodide have demonstrated a full width at half maximum (FWHM) energy resolution of 4.58% at 662 keV. Single crystals providing sufficient surface areas for coupling with scintillators; are difficult to grow and are therefore cost prohibitive to use in large field of view applications. However, polycrystalline films can be fabricated quickly and cheaply on a variety of surfaces including curved ones. We have therefore developed a thermal vapor transport method of growing polycrystalline mercuric iodide films onto transparent glass substrates coated with indium tin oxide. A palladium thin film is thermally evaporated on top of the film and the photodetectors; are operated at low voltage (up to 0.4 V/mu m) demonstrating the first use of polycrystalline mercuric iodide as a photodetector. The polycrystalline mercuric iodide films have a high resistivity producing a very low dark current typically about 1 nA per square cm at 0.4 V/mu m. When coupled to cesium iodide a FWHM energy resolution of 9% at 662 keV is obtained. The quantum efficiency at 570 nm is about 40% as compared to single crystal mercuric iodide which is 80%. We are currently optimizing the growth method to improve the quantum efficiency with the ultimate goal of obtaining an energy resolution close to that of single crystal performance.

Optical absorption spectra of nanoclusters of lead iodide, synthesized by the colloidal technique, have been investigated. An alternative electrolyte based on acetylacetone-pyridine-iodine for dye-sensitized solar cells

We prepared a new organic electrolyte by the reaction among acetylacetone, pyridine and iodine in 3-methoxypropionitrile. The UV-Visible spectra, conductivity measurement and ESI mass spectra were used to study this electrolyte. It was suggested that the quaternization reaction of pyridine took place in this electrolyte solution and two kinds of pyridinium iodide were formed. The efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using this electrolyte reaches 6.72%, which is higher than that of DSCs using LiI electrolyte and methylpropylimidazolium iodide electrolyte. It implies that these pyridinium iodides are effective alternative component of iodide for the electrolytes of DSCs. As this organic iodide electrolyte was in situ synthesized based on iodine instead of alkyl iodide, it will be cost-effective and facilitative for the production of DSCs. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Iodine plays an important role in thyroid physiology resulting from its importance as a requisite substrate for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and from its action as a regulator of thyroid function. Following intestinal absorption, inorganic iodide is largely confined to the extracellular fluid. Serum concentrations of inorganic iodide well reflect the amount of iodine present in the extracellular compartment. Since serum inorganic iodide levels are important determinants of thyroid iodine uptake, serum iodide measurement offers a valuable tool for the investigation of many basic and clinical aspects of thyroid iodine metabolism. Here we summarize important aspects of iodine metabolism and focus selectively on technical aspects of serum inorganic iodide measurement and on the kinetics of inorganic iodide in various states of iodine excess. Presently, paired-ion, reversed-phase HPLC with electrochemical detection is obviously the best method for measurement of serum inorganic iodide being highly sensitive, easy to perform, and almost completely insensitive to interfering substances. Using this method, we could demonstrate an acute increase of serum inorganic iodide during the administration of large amounts of iodide as Lugol’s solution given preoperatively in patients with Graves’ hyperthyroidism. In patients under treatment with the iodine containing drug amiodarone (n=37), serum inorganic iodide levels were highly elevated (range 3.5-208.2 mu g/dl, median 36.6 mu g/dl). Serum concentrations of inorganic iodide were correlated neither to the daily amiodarone dose, nor to the serum levels of amiodarone.

Dye dependent regeneration dynamics in dye sensitized nanocrystalline solar cells: Evidence for the formation of a ruthenium bipyridyl cation/iodide intermediate

We report a transient absorption study of the kinetics of re-reduction of ruthenium bipyridyl dye cations adsorbed to nanocrystalline TiO2 films by iodide ions, employing a series of Ru-II(dcbpy)(2)X dyes, where dcpby = 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridyl and X = (NCS)(2), (CN)(2), DTC (diethyldithiocarbamate), and Cl-2. The data indicate that this re-reduction (or ‘regeneration’) reaction proceeds via a transient (dye(+)-iodide) intermediate complex formed by reaction of photogenerated dye cations with one iodide ion. The subsequent reaction of this complex with a second iodide ion, forming I-2(-), is shown to be the kinetically and thermodynamically limiting step in the overall regeneration reaction. The implications of this reaction scheme for the function of dye sensitized photoelectrochemical cells are discussed, considering in particular the high photovoltaic efficiencies obtained for such devices employing such ruthenium bipyridyl senstiser dyes in combination with iodide/tri-iodide based redox electrolytes.
