The Raman spectra of I2, Br2, and ICl have been studied in various solutions in the region below 400 cm.-1 by means of a Raman spectrophotometer equipped with a 50 mw. He-Ne laser. Quite satisfactory Raman spectra of these colored solutions were obtained, but for some Br and ICl complexes chem. reactions occurred. The observed Raman frequencies for the halogens or the interhalogen were considerably lower than the corresponding gas values, and the data have been interpreted on the basis of charge-transfer interaction. Some very strong donor-halogen interactions were observed, in which the stretching force constant of the halogens was reduced to approx. half the gas value. A Raman band at 163 cm.-1 in the pyridineiodine system was interpreted as the N-I stretching mode; otherwise no Raman bands were observed which can with certainty be assigned to the stretching of the donor-halogen charge-transfer bond. 36 references.

Anal. of I-containing (50-69% of I) pharmaceutical preparations by combustion in O utilizes a new modification of the method and a comparison is made with the existing ones. The sample (0.02-0.03 g.) is placed on the Pt grid (initially not in contact with the solution), 10 ml. 2N KOH and 50 ml. H2O are poured into a flask and O bubbled through 5 min. Then the sample is burned (20-30 sec.) and the flask tightly stopped. The content is then shaken (5-6 min.) and allowed to stand for 10 min. more. Br (5 ml.) and AcOH are then added, the solution stirred and 0.3 ml. 85% HCO2H added. After the solution has lost its color, 20 ml. of N H2SO4 and 0.05 g. KI are added, and the flask allowed to stand in dark 5 min. The liberated I is titrated with 0.1N Na2S2O3 (1% starch indicator). The time of anal. is 30 min. The relative error is �.4%.

It has been known for some time that the dielec. polarization P for complexes is more than the simple sum of the compounding mols. By comparing numerous reliable data from the literature, it was noted that not only ΔP will accept a rather large value for the case of complex formation, but Δε also, which is understandable, as ε (dielec. constant) appears in the formula for P. By plotting curves ΔP vs. composition and Δε vs. composition, a maximum in such curves will indicate the formation of a complex. For allyl isothiocyanate and piperidine in benzene these 2 maximum coincided with those for viscosity, deviation of the sp. volume, heat of mixing, n, and the temperature coefficient of the viscosity. For pyridine and ICl in CHCl3 the ΔP and Δε maximum coincided with one of the m.p. maximum in the m.p. diagram of pyridine ICl. Thus the plotting of the ΔP-composition and Δε-composition diagrams may serve to replace other very tedious determinations of other physicochem. values which have been used heretofore to find out the presence or absence of complexes. The maximum in these curves will not occur if merely van der Waals forces are acting. If more than one complex is formed, only one will give rise to a maximum; the other will be indicated by a break in the curve. Thus for the case AlBr3-dioxane the break is found for (AlBr3)2.C4H8O2, whereas the maximum lies at AlBr3.C4H8O2. The higher the maximum in these curves, the more stable the complexes.

The dielec. properties of ICl systems with dioxane, pyridine, and quinoline, and of IBr with dioxane, CHCl3, and CCl4 as solvents were investigated. The maximum deviations of the dielec. constants and polarization from the calculated values corresponds to the formation of definite complex compounds in solution In the ICl-C5H5N and ICl-quinoline systems in CHCl3, solution, the maximum deviations of ΔAP and Δε are very sharp, and their values exceed by many times the deviations in the systems of IBr and ICl with dioxane and CCl4. A comparison of the values of the polarization deviations and the instability constants of C4H8O2.ICl and C4H8O2. IBr shows that the systems formed in ICI and IBr by dioxane must be considered irrational, while ICl forms with pyridine and quinoline rational systems. With ICl quinoline forms 2 compounds: C9H7N.ICl and C9H7N.2ICl; the second is more stable in CHCl4 solution than is the analogous compound with pyridine.
