A TEM investigation was performed to determine the defect structure of multishell AgBr (111) tabular crystals containing a shell with a low iodide concentration and one with a high iodide concentration. The twins that induce tabular growth and stacking fault contrast in the region of the iodide shells have been observed, similar to previously studied AgBr/Ag(Br,I) coreshell crystals. Moreover in some of the crystals dislocations have been observed, sometimes even an entire network. The number of dislocations formed varies for the different methods of iodide addition. A higher number of dislocations and thicker crystals point towards a higher local concentration of iodide. Effect of insulin on iodide uptake in mouse mammary gland explants

Studies were carried out primarily to assess the role of insulin in regulating iodide uptake in the mammary gland. Using cultured mammary gland explants from virgin and pregnant mice (12-14 days into gestation), insulin (1 mug/ml) was shown to stimulate iodide uptake after a 2-day exposure period. In a quantitative Western blot analysis employing an antibody to the sodium-iodide symporter, insulin stimulated an upregulation of the transporter protein after a 4-, 8-, or 20-hr treatment with insulin. Perchlorate and thiocyanate abolished the insulin effect on iodide uptake, further suggesting that the insulin response occurs via a stimulation of the sodium-iodide symporter. The data indicate that this re-reduction (or ‘regeneration’) reaction proceeds via a transient (dye(+)-iodide) intermediate complex formed by reaction of photogenerated dye cations with one iodide ion. The subsequent reaction of this complex with a second iodide ion, forming I-2(-), is shown to be the kinetically and thermodynamically limiting step in the overall regeneration reaction. The implications of this reaction scheme for the function of dye sensitized photoelectrochemical cells are discussed, considering in particular the high photovoltaic efficiencies obtained for such devices employing such ruthenium bipyridyl senstiser dyes in combination with iodide/tri-iodide based redox electrolytes.

Iodine plays an important role in thyroid physiology resulting from its importance as a requisite substrate for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and from its action as a regulator of thyroid function. Following intestinal absorption, inorganic iodide is largely confined to the extracellular fluid. Serum concentrations of inorganic iodide well reflect the amount of iodine present in the extracellular compartment. Since serum inorganic iodide levels are important determinants of thyroid iodine uptake, serum iodide measurement offers a valuable tool for the investigation of many basic and clinical aspects of thyroid iodine metabolism. Here we summarize important aspects of iodine metabolism and focus selectively on technical aspects of serum inorganic iodide measurement and on the kinetics of inorganic iodide in various states of iodine excess. Presently, paired-ion, reversed-phase HPLC with electrochemical detection is obviously the best method for measurement of serum inorganic iodide being highly sensitive, easy to perform, and almost completely insensitive to interfering substances. Using this method, we could demonstrate an acute increase of serum inorganic iodide during the administration of large amounts of iodide as Lugol’s solution given preoperatively in patients with Graves’ hyperthyroidism. In patients under treatment with the iodine containing drug amiodarone (n=37), serum inorganic iodide levels were highly elevated (range 3.5-208.2 mu g/dl, median 36.6 mu g/dl). Serum concentrations of inorganic iodide were correlated neither to the daily amiodarone dose, nor to the serum levels of amiodarone.
