Simultaneous determination of iodide and iodate in seawater by transient isotachophoresis-capillary zone electrophoresis with artificial seawater as the background electrolyte

We developed capillary zone electrophoresis with transient isotachophoresis (lTP) as an on-line concentration procedure for simultaneous determination of iodide and iodate in seawater. The effective mobility of iodide was decreased by addition of 20 mM cetyltrimethylammonium chloride to an artificial seawater background electrolyte so that transient ITP functioned for both iodide and iodate. Limits of detection for iodide and iodate were 4.0 and 5.0 mug/l (as iodine) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Values of the relative standard deviation of peak area, peak height, and migration times for iodide and iodate were 2.9, 1.3, 1.0 and 2.3, 2.1, 1.0%, respectively. Sensitive flow-injection amperometric detection of iodide using Mn3+ and As3+

A rapid, selective, and sensitive kinetic flow-injection method for iodide content determination with amperometric detection on a platinum electrode was developed. The method is based on the catalytic effect of iodide on the Mn3+ reaction with As3+ in the presence of sulfuric acid. The calibration curve was linear in the concentration range from 5.0 x 10(-7) to 1.0 x 10(-4) mol/L iodide. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 5.0 x 10(-9) mol/L iodide. The relative standard deviations (RSD) were 1.68% and 3.03% for 1.0 x 10(-3) mol/L standard and 1.0 x 10(-6) mol/L iodide solution (n = 6), respectively. The method has been successfully applied for determination of iodide in waters, table salts, fodder, organic substances and human blood sera. The results were compared with those obtained by a standard AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) method, as well as with those obtained by a kinetic spectrophotometric procedure for determination of iodide.

Highly sensitive analysis of iodide anion in seaweed as pentafluorophenoxyethyl derivative by capillary gas chromatography

A simple and sensitive gas chromatography (GC) method is described for the trace analysis of iodide anion (iodide) in processed seaweed as an organic derivative. The method is based on the derivatization of aqueous iodide extracted from seaweed with 2-(pentafluorophenoxy)ethyl 2-(piperidino)ethanesulfonate in toluene using tetra-n-hexylammonium bromide as a phase-transfer catalyst. The resulting pentafluorophenoxyethyl iodide is highly responsive to an electron-capture detector (ECD) and was analyzed by GC-ECD, giving a low detection limit of similar to2.7 nM (2.7 fmol/muL injected). Interferences of some common anions in the analysis of iodide were studied and proved to be minimal. Application of the method to the analysis of iodide in processed seaweed was performed.

The decomposition mechanism of iodide-based molten salts was discussed, and it was found that elimination of oxygen from the environment is effective to stabilize the iodide-based molten salts at high temperatures.
